UNIT 9
POPULATION
Population is the people who live in a town, country or the whole world
We divide the population into 3 groups:
The child population - less than 16 years old
The adult population - between 17 and 64 years old
The elderly population - 65 years old and over
The population changes due to the birth rate, the death rate, the emigration and the immigration
The birth rate and the immigration INCREASE the population (there are more people)
The death rate and the emigration DECREASE the population (there are less people)
Emigration (emigrants) - Immigration (immigrants)
Emigrants: decrease population (If people leave, there are less people)
Immigrants: increase population (If people arrive, there are more people)
Remember! If you go on holidays to another city, town or country you are NOT an emigrant or an immigrant you are just a tourist!!
POPULATION AND EMPLOYMENT
Economically active population: THEY ARE ABLE (CAPABLE) TO WORK
The working population
The unemployed population
Economically inactive population
People who do unpaid jobs (they are not paid, like volunteers)
People who don't work for some reason: they are retired, they are students...
Economic activities
Three sectors:
Primary
It includes the activities that produce or obtain natural products
Secondary
It includes all the activities related to the transformation of natural products into manufactured products such as craft and industry
Tertiary
Activities that provide a service. Jobs related to health, education, transport, catering, etc.
